At Da Club!!

What you see in the image is an expandable-keyboard cellphone. It is the number one sight viewed by yours truly this past Saturday night. I hit the club! OMG!! Everybody and their mother had a cellphone either in their hand, pocketbook or attached to their waist. My intended view was a bevy of delectable honeys in my direct or peripheral vision. Trust me - there was a ton and a half of beautiful, vivacious women to be ogled, but, these phones seemed to play a key role in their lives. I say that as every other moment was littered by one person or another glancing down at their phone, or diligently typing a response at lightning-fast speeds.

I found myself standing at the end of the bar, perusing the room to see which young lady would attract my eye first. As I glanced down, I saw no less than three cellphones gracing the bar, each lit with a neon-blue backlight. Upon glancing up again, there were cellphones in the hands of nearly everybody seated or standing at the bar - except for yours truly, of course. Those who held their phones in their hands were busy reading the latest text-message or creating one of their own to send to a waiting friend. Years ago, nearly everyone was seen in public with a pager attached to the hip. Next came a cellphone attached to the ear, which was followed by a long white cord that we have come to know as earbuds. Just that quickly, that sight has been replaced by expandable-keyboard cellphones. I was truly amazed at the amount that I saw this past Saturday night.

Of course, by now, you're wondering what in the world was I doing
"at da club". I have a friend who needed to be out and about without the lure of being around the "old gang" - a recovering addict. I thought that I would show him that a good time can be had without the use of drugs and alcohol. This is the second outing that we've had, the first inside a club. He seems to be getting the hang of it and it looks at though it may become a fairly regular thing. Fortunately for me, it will only be every other weekend that he is in town.

We went to a club called
"Morgan's", which is a club that I had frequented years ago. Figuratively speaking, it was my second home. I had ventured into this particular club about four years ago, after not having been there for a very long time. I stayed all of ten (10) minutes before walking back out the door. Everyone in the club seemed young enough to be my child or grandchild! A year later, I entered Morgan's again, wondering why I had only stayed a few minutes the last time. Needless to say, it didn't take me long to remember. So, years later, there I was, again.

An extremely attractive woman, who was seated at the bar right beside me, leaned over, while pulling tickets from her pocketbook, and asked if I'd be interested in attending a fish-fry at another popular hot-spot. I kindly replied that I'd think about it. She smiled and returned to staring off into space, sipping on some bottled brew. I eyed her off and on from the corner of my eye, but, decided not to start conversation as it would lead to nowhere, what with the ages of the attendees. My buddy had found his way to the dancefloor and was shaking quite a tailfeather when I spotted him. As a few patrons to my left rose to leave, I quickly scrambled for a seat, in the corner, in the dark. I ordered another ginger ale, much to the dismay of the barmaid, and prepared to nurse it for the remainder of the night. Finally, my buddy left the dancefloor and headed for the bar for some liquid libations to cool himself down. He stopped to order at precisely the same spot from which I had recently moved - next to this vivacious woman with the tickets. She was now talking to her girlfriend who was seated next to her, but, when bud strolled up, the tickets came up for air, once again. He didn't buy a ticket but proceeded to chat with her for quite some time, buying them drinks as they both giggled (the two ladies, that is). Later, he tells me that this vivacious young lady that I so graciously and magnanimously passed up was (so he tells it) thirty-eight (38) years old - not the
as-young-as-my-daughter vixen that I had earlier supposed.

There is a very real, very valid reason that I stay out of clubs these days. I can see myself engaged in a flirtacious evening with some fresh, young hottie and she decides to make a post of it on her
My Space or Facebook page. I can see my name, description, and possible photo (what with today's gadgety phones) on her page. I also see my daughter's profile there in the "friends" section. OMG!!! Is there a rock that I can crawl under right now???!!! Years ago, I walked into Morgan's, and walked right back out because the crowd was way too young for me. I'm sorry - waaaaaaaay too young for me. Ironically, because of my humanitarian gesture taking place, I finally stayed this time, struck gold in a beautiful, vivacious vixen who was not as-young-as-my-daughter, and I passed on the opportunity. Sheez!!

We left the club about ten minutes before closing, and headed for the car. After realizing that the club was about to close, we decided to stand outside the front door with the rest of the crowd and watch the parade of exiting honeys (as if we weren't going to do it anyway). The procession was inudated by expandable-keyboard cellphones either being read or typed upon. They were making the
"hook-up" or lying about why they couldn't make the "hook-up". Either way, it was all being executed by way of man's latest form of human contact and communication - the expandable-keyboard cellphone . . . at da club.

Not a club man myself. Glad you and your friend enjoyed it.

As for cellphones, ugh!!! Don't have one and not wanting one. IMO, people are too connected to those gadgets. You go out to have fun not to have your eyes glued to some 2 inch screen. I just don't get it.

You've said that before on a number of occasions, but when I hear that you don't like cellphones, it still amazes me. You come off (to me) as a techie. As for me, I love cellphones and all kinds of digital toys. I see your point though - why be glued to a cellphone, when you've come out to "play"? I'm not a club man either - anymore. I feel so out of place. The clubs for people my age feature "oldies" which I hate with a passion. Therefore, I stay away. After buddy-roll is somewhat "situated", it will be the end for me - again. Peace.

Umm...fish-fry tickets?

I love having my cell phone with me it doesn't keep me connected to IT as much as it keeps me connected to my friends. There are just some things that you absolutely, positively have to tell a friend or take a photo of...right then.

The last time I was at a club, there was a guy in a tomato red three piece suit with matching hat and shoes. Although the place was jam packed, he zeroed in on me...of course. I was annoyed at first but then, I started feeling really bad as he told me with great pride that his mother made his suit for him. I bought HIM a drink. You know what...I might have gotten hustled myself. LOL

I like computers and other little gadgete but cell phones to me are just annoying pieces of electronics. Now if they just make a mobile device where I can just check my email or surf the web and fits into my hand I'll be more for that. But cellphones, Nah!!!
And Michelle, there is a privacy thing you have to remember that comes with those camera phones. Forget about big brother, we are watching and recording each other non stop.

Choc - Just for you. This will be my next toy. It is exactly what you're looking for (click on my name in THIS comment). Peace.

Sure we are watching...and photographing...and sending the pics to friends. Truth be told, I'm not half as afraid of someone taking a random shot of me as I am of all the privacy violations the government and other agencies are doing in the name of national security. You know the GPS tracking system in most cell phones that is "supposed" to be used to track you in case of an emergency? Well, that turned sour real quick. Spouses are spying, retailers are tracking neighborhoods that you frequent so that they can send you texts for bargains in the area, and the government is ALWAYS watching. THOSE things have me more concerned than anything.

Being female and having lived alone and travelled alone for so long, my cell was also a form of security for me. There is nothing worse than having car trouble on a lonely stretch of highway without a cell phone.

Thanks for the link, some of those products seem to be right up my alley.
Uh, missy, that may be but for me some stranger catching you off guard, maybe falling on your behind and then posting it on youtube, concerns me. I am big on privacy like that. With the government, well that is to be expected with them trying to catch terrorists and all.

Missy said...

So you believe that we should sacrifice our privacy in the hopes of cathing terrorists?

"He who sacrifices freedom freedom for security deserves neither."

I am merely stating a fact of life, not that I agree that it will lead to more capture of terrorists.
I don't want my privay invade by anyone but it is expected from the government being they are a bigger entity but not expected from you average joe who shouldn't have the ordinary capabilities to invade your privacy.

There is no way that I could be without a cellphone. I have gotten myself in many a situation where, had it not been for the celly, Lord knows what would have become of me. I just can't fathom breaking down on the road without a cellphone. As for the payphones that are still on the street, I wouldn't touch most of them with the proverbial pole, half of which don't work or require too much change. I could name a few dozen situations where a cellphone has been a must for me, but that's redundancy. Get over your whatevers and get on board, man. Peace.

I had a cell phone before, a pre paid cell phone and it was an alright piece of electronics, nothing that I saw as something I needed. I think for some people like myself you don't need this gadget, for others the case is different. I am going to have to hold the line here and say no. I am still open to a pocket sized mobile gadget the surfs the web and checks email but that where my love ends.

Well, there are some great little gadgets out there. The one I showed you was fab, but, there are others that also do everything a full-sized PC does, but, can almost fit in ones pocket. I'll send you a few links. Stick to your guns. Peace.

Hi blackstarr...I decided to visit your blog.

what is a "fish-fry"?

I found it humourous to read your repeated description of "vivacious vixens" since you wrote over on black women vote about not seeing just the sexual allure of black women. Too bad you passed up the 38 yr old. If you're really 56, she still is a bit young. lol. I won't go there.

As a young woman I will say it seems weird to hear an older man talk about "perusing" young women but then describe himself as "gracious" for not trying to pick one up. You even wrote "ogle"! So basically ogling the younglings is cool...just make us feel all nice and icky. But you'll be gracious.

Unfortunately for you, you cannot tell I'm writing this with a smile. I didn't get on your blog to attack you :-)

I actually appreciate that you realize that there is "too young."

I haven't been in a club recently but yes, cellphone preoccupation is the rage. I definitely pass too much time texting and am guilty of texting just about everywhere, including while crossing a busy intersection (on foot). I do draw the line at driving and texting unlike many of my peers.

I do take technology sabbaticals once in a while and have no problem not picking up my phone and not returning texts.

A "fish-fry" is similar to a "beef and beer", which is an afternoon party (generally in the afternoon, although some are at night) at a bar, where you drink, eat fish, dance and socialize.

When did 38 become too old for 56? What is a ripe old age for a woman when a man is a 56 year old? The women my age are only interested in young bucks.

I guess I can't stress enough the fact that the first thing that happens between a man and a woman is a visual thing. All of the non-tangible things like intellect, good-heartedness, kindness, etc, have to be appreciated later. They can't be known at "first sight". But we are not going to argue that point, again, right?

I pretty much know which ones to "ogle" and which ones to pretend that I don't see. Having a 21 year old daughter makes me turn my head with the quickness when a "child" is present. And the only reason that I am looking only instead of "making a move on" is that I dropped out of the dating field for a minute while I get my young uns squared away. This year coming up is their last year of college, which means cars, apartments, and perhaps one last family vacation before they ease out of Dad's life, you know, leave me with that "empty nest" feeling.

I'm not much of a fan of texting, but, I do, however, love most technology. But, taking a sabbatical every now and then is good for the soul.

Today is the 18th. I don't know how I let your comments slip by for so long. I am usually very diligent about responding quickly. Apologies. I'll do better. So glad that you stopped by, and hope that you will return at some point. Have a pleasant weekend. Peace.
